Selaiyur and the surrounding areas were primarily farming settlements on a larger patch of scrub vegetation. Recent out-blown developments have resulted in destruction of this native habitat and occupation. Agaram (35 km from Chennai,8 km from Tambaram) still holds out as a farming settlement and along with its natural tanks and hillocks attracts a large number of birds and insects.
